Personal Narrative: My Concept Of Control

Control. Everyone wants to be in control. Whether it be with their family, their friends, their finances, or their health, the idea of control holds a lot of power. As I walked into UW2-240 at 1:10pm for my 1:15pm class, I had no idea how the idea of ‘control’ would shape the course I was about to take. As class began, Dr. Boss asked us: “How much control do you think you have?”
Personally, I didn’t even know the answer. I thought it was to be viewed it in terms of class structure. Typically, within the business courses I’ve taken at The University of Washington Bothell, the format has been predetermined for us: Lecture, midterm, lecture, final. Throughout my life, I had grown up as the ‘skinny kid.’ Playing soccer, I was pushed around and made fun of for as long as I could remember. Upon graduating high school, I was 5’7, 105 lbs., and wanted to make a change. For three years I worked hard inside and outside the gym. I constantly learned new ways to eat healthy and to put on muscle. I quickly jumped up to 130 lbs. in no time! However, as my senior year of college hit, I became stagnant. The stress of upper level courses, job hunting, and family matters crowded my life, and I was not able to work out consistently or eat properly. It was when Dr. Boss gave us the time we needed to make this happen that I knew my goal was to reconnect with my previous lifestyle and truly achieve a healthier lifestyle for myself. To me, a healthier lifestyle will be achieved in two ways: by implementing a fitness plan and creating and following through with a healthy diet. Throughout my essay, I will discuss why I chose this BHAG and why it matters to me, how I planned it out, how my results went (positive and negative), and the takeaways I
