I just stood there petting her and continued to tell her that I loved her and I that I was sorry. The last thing I remember seeing was her looking at me and making a soft meowing sound before she closed her eyes for the last time. I knew I was crying at that point and when I felt her stop moving. I felt so much grief and I didn’t quite understand why it hurt so much. I had lived through my grandparents funeral and sure I had been upset, but it was nothing compared to how I felt at that time. Even now, writing this is hard. I think back to that day and all the sadness of that day comes to mind. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a pet understands how you feel when you lose a pet.
There is also the few people who haven’t lost a pet or even owned a pet. Some people say, “Why don’t you just go get another pet?” or, “Why are you so upset? It was only a pet not your grandparents who died”. It’s not that easy though; it takes a bit of time to get over losing a pet. Over the years that you had that pet and lived together, you formed a type of routine or bond. You get up together and eat together, leave your pet alone for a few hours, then come home to them waiting for you and then you relax together in a chair. Hal Herzog explains, “So the theory that people love pets because they make us feel needed” (Herzog). Pets in general are sometimes used as a helpful tool in our lives. Based off of research done on depression by HABRI, short for The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative, states, “The comfort that these animals provide is beneficial” and “Pets are always “on tap” with their unconditional love and are a wonderful cure for loneliness” (HABRI). So when you have a bad day at work or you just feel lonely, your pet will be there to help you. He or she will try to make you smile in their own special way.
