In the short story Marigolds, Collier uses Imagery, Flashback, and Juxtaposition to create her voice. She writes that “I remember , another incongruency of memory- a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust. ”(16), which is an example of juxtaposition because it's comparing both things for a purpose. An example of imagery is “multicolored skein of fourteen-going-on-fifteen as I recall that devastating moment where i was more women than child. ”(17)…

In the story marigolds as young Lizabeth matures from childhood she changes, her perspective on life changes. She realizes that she has matured and has become an adult. I found that the theme is that it is important that people change emotionally as they get older and wiser. For example, she explains that she develops compassion after she destroys Miss Lottie's flowers, she feels that once you have lost your innocence you gain compassion when you become and adult. Another form of this change is Miss Lottie she changes emotionally as she get older because she cares for her flowers and all of her love and joy go into the flowers but she no longer cares for the presence of people or the wellness of her home.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
