In the story,Excerpt from The Winter Hibiscus, there's a girl named Saeng. She recently moved to the United States from Laos and it's not going so well for her. She failed her driving test and still misses her family back at Laos, back at her little house where she'd light candles for the spirit who was taking care of her home and her family. Her mother is obviously also having a hard time adjusting and still can't forget about her homeland. The hibiscus plant, to Saeng, represents all her happy and cherished moments. To the mother it represents all she's lived and loved in that country with that little flower. They both felt sad and happy at the same time , they were sad that they left but happy that they moved on.

For instance, "When she got to the hibiscus, she reached out and touched a petal gently. It feel smooth and cool, with a hint of velvet toward the center - just as she had known it would feel. " She was so used to those plants that now seeing them, in a country where its cold all the time, she

They both had a lot of experiences with the flower and even that reminds them of all they've been through. "And beside it was yet another old friend, a small shrub with waxy leaves and dainty flowers with dainty flowers with purplish petals and white centers. " They both considered that flower, that simple flower to be apart of them, a flower that basically reflected who they were and what they were into. A flower that they have been seeing since they both were toddlers . Probably their first discovery when it came to nature. " They were both used to this plant growing in the side walks and cracks in the concrete, they weren't used to this flower being "tamed" in a pot. They miss their homeland and a simple plant can bring it all

Adrian College English instructor, Cynthia Bily, in her article, “‘The Chrysanthemums’” (2002), claims that Elisa’s situation ties directly to the concept of ecofeminism and her natural connection to the earth. She supports her claim by first expressing Elisa’s connection to the earth as a natural phenomena through her garden, then by explaining how her “planter’s hand” is a gift that is naturally occurring, and finally by describing how men fail to recognize Elisa and her garden as a sense of strength, preventing them to not connect with the earth as she does. Bily’s purpose is to explain how ecofeminism is tied to the story, “The Chrysanthemums” to her audience. She creates a formal and educational tone for readers wishing to expand on “The…

In the short story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker, the reader follows a young girl named Myop who goes away from her home on a sharecropper’s farm into a forest, only to find the dead body of a lynched man. The story is written in such a style that the reader never sees the ending coming. Utilizing the elements of imagery and symbolism, Walker showcases the shock value of a girl realizing that life is not the same for her as it is for everyone else. From the very start, Myop is clearly unaware of the horrors that the world offers. Myop loves the outdoors, as “she felt light and good in the warm sun” (lines 6-7), and she is so completely unaware of what goes on in the outside world that even just “the harvesting of the corn and cotton, peanuts and squash, made each day a golden surprise” (lines 3-4).…
