Personal Narrative: How Junior High Band Impact My Life

Improved Essays
At the end of sixth grade, the junior high band came to my elementary school and performed for us. I watched in awe as students, not that much older than me, played music with their instruments. The flute players in the front row especially caught my attention; they were right next to the band directors and held their instruments up to the side, rather than down in front of them like the others. The flute had a high pitched melody and a bright silver color that appealed to me. That day, I signed up for the beginner band on the Coppinville Junior High registration sheet. However, at the young age of twelve, I did not realize that the next five years in band would impact my life so much. I have met several influential people, gained confidence in what I do, and developed my skills as a leader.

Band has impacted my life by allowing me to meet many influential people. I have had three spectacular band directors throughout my high school years, Mr. Williams, Mr. Brumberg, and Mr. Weiler. In my ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade years they have proven to be more than just teachers. They are my mentors and confidants. My sister was very sick at a game last marching season and had to sit in one of the buses with a nurse. Even though I was a section leader, Mr. Weiler allowed me to stay with her until the game ended. Usually he has an intimidating and strict appearance and seems facetious at times, but that day I saw that he is incredibly caring. In class, I often have solos and can get anxious at times when playing them. Even though Mr. Weiler is my class' director, Mr. Brumberg and Mr. Williams often come to where I sit and reassure me and help me read rhythms. Another influential person in my life is my flute tutor, Chelsea. She is a friend of my band director and a music education major at Troy University. I have been taking private lessons with her for two years. Though she is four years older than me, I consider her a close friend as well as a mentor. Chelsea has helped me develop my skills as a flute player and has seen me play at my worst as well as my best. Last

In junior high I was the low man on the totem pole and terrified of playing in front of people. I ended up being the last chair in eighth grade and decided then that even though I was not the best player, I could still practice and try to improve. By my freshman year, I had started gradually getting higher chairs in play tests. My sophomore year, I managed to get first chair in symphonic band and had my first solo in that year’s spring concert. That same year, I also tried out for all state band and district honor band where you have to learn twelve major scales, a melodic and harmonic scale, and the chromatic along with two prepared pieces of different styles, lyrical and technical. I was three points away from making the district honor band, much to my disappointment, but I decided to work even harder for the next audition. This year, I made the fourth chair out of ten flutes for district honor band and made white band, the second top band for all

The moment I decided to join the band was in elementary school when our class went to watch the middle school band play their Christmas concert. Although several of my friends had told me that classical music was dull and only useful for putting others to sleep, I loved listening to it. I would try to figure out what instruments were played and their individual part. I was glad to be able to listen to a live band without the need of speakers or headphones.…

I worked tooth and nail to succeed in my academics, piano and saxophone, and any goal I set my eyes on. For public school, since freshman year, I had set my eyes on becoming woodwind captain for my school, J.P. Taravella, and making the all county jazz band. Through over 230 hours of marching band, and countless more hours improving saxophone, I had finally achieved both goals and continued to improve on my craft. This motto of good better best gave me the momentum to never stop trying to outdo myself, and this later also…

Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…
