They weren’t nice, cheerful, lift-you-up people, but they led to the best of their abilities, and I still applaud them for doing that during a very bad season. This next fall I’m going to be a senior and try my hardest to be the best leader I can be. I’m not going to try to be the best friend of the new players, but I will pick them up and help them to the best of my abilities-and that includes protecting them from hazing. I trust my fellow seniors to make good choices, but just expecting them to be responsible is a recipe for disaster. Should one of my teammates ever try to get a freshman to do something dangerous I will be the first to get in their way and stop them. My generation has not been very bad with hazing. The last hazing incident that got national attention I can remember was the marching band example I talked about, though I’m sure there have been a few others. We don’t have the widespread hazing you may find on sports teams and groups in the 1970’s and 80’s-this doesn’t mean we can let up on anti-hazing efforts, though.
