As I was just finishing frying the last batch of okra I shoveled crunchy pieces of okra onto a plate that was already piled with others. Instinctively, I removed the pan from the burner, but my naive self-had fuzzy, socks on without grips. I slipped, hot, crackling oil flooded into the hot burner that was still on. Before I even had time to process what had just happened a big, orange, scorching hot fire appeared in front of my frightened eyes. At first, I stood there speechless, my heart practically about to burst out of my chest, my stomach churning the way women had churned butter. The fire began to enlarge, I felt tremendously flustered as the hotness of the fire sank into my skin, yet I was still shivering. After it clicked into my head I praised the Lord for the placement of the sink in which contains the baking soda--right next to the oven top. I dived to the sink and pulled out a box of baking soda filled right to the middle. Tightening my grip on the box I violently shook it onto the burner and pan. Only a few heartbeats later did the fire completely vanish into the baking soda. At this point, I was in way too much shock from this alarming event to perceive the mess I had made. I darted into my parent's empty bedroom and called my mom when she had answered my heart was still racing and I failed to discontinue my uncontrollable shaking.
