Personal Narrative: Basketball, Track, And Long Jump

Decent Essays
This was the year that sports started. I was so excited. There was basketball, track, and cheerleading. I was obviously going to basketball. I knew I wasn’t going to do cheerleading. And I wasn’t sure about track, but that was at the end of the year so I had time to think about it. Well when the time came I decided to do it. I mean what have I got to lose. If I didn't’ like it, then I didn’t have to do it the next year. So I was doing good in practice and everything for it being my first year. The events I had been doing were the 55 sprint, the 75 sprint, and long jump. I liked long jump the best. I felt like I always improved or didn’t. I could see what I really needed to work on. So throughout the track meets, I didn’t place or anything but I was still doing pretty good for me. …show more content…
So for one of the last meets I was getting ready to go do my favorite event, long jump. I’m at the sandpit for long jump, measuring my steps. Ok. That was set. I was ready to do my three trials. As I was waiting for everyone else to get their steps in, I was thinking about what I could do to improve my jumps at this meet. All I needed to do was believe that I could do it and try my best. So minutes pass by of me building myself up getting ready for my jump. I had a good feeling about this meet. Ok. It was go time. I went to my starting spot and was ready to sprint. I started picking up speed. I’m going as fast as my human body can go, and I leap off the ground and into the sandpit. I land very gracefully and turn around to see the judges say that it was a scratch. Ugghh. Well I still had two more tries. I go for a second round and you’d think I’d have more luck but once again, I scratched my jump. I was getting mad. I calmed down and said to myself that I can do this. Last run and last jump. I had to make it count. So I go as hard as I can on my last

The difference between that track season (sophomore year) versus the last one (junior year), was consistency. I improved by a lot sophomore year and got much better times but I lacked consistency. I was stuck in a cycle: race well, put too much pressure on myself, not do as well, feel really sad, and then back to square one… maybe. This went on into my junior year cross country season.…

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

There is a special place in my heart for that 1600 meter, though. I had trained all season for this and was feeling like I still wasn’t ready. On the ride to the meet, over the hum of the bus’s tires, I remember thinking, “You’ve got this. You’ve got this.”. Over and over in my head.…

It was my senior year of basketball and it was just getting started. This was it, my final year where we were going to win State and I was going to get a college scholarship. I had prepared all summer and in the preseason, nothing was going to get in my way. Our team was smaller this year and lacked the skill we had in the previous years, but that just meant I was going to have to step up even more. I was totally ready for the season and whatever challenges we would face as a team.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
