Personal Narrative: Orthopedic Surgery

Improved Essays
At seven years of age my life changed forever when my parents enrolled me in a gymnastics class. Since then I spend most of my life inside a smelly, chalked filled gym. In September 2014, I was sent to an orthopedic hip specialist due to a lesion that was found in my left hip. The lesion was found when I had an x-ray taken of my lower back in an effort to understand why I had shin splints. My hip had been hurting months prior but I assumed it was from rigorous stretching my coach was having me do. The doctor ordered me to have a Bone Scan and MRI performed on the lesion in my hip. The results came back clean, but I was referred to a specialist for a second opinion.
March 2015, six months after being referred for a second opinion, I was finally sitting in the doctor's office waiting to hear the results. By now, my hip was in tremendous pain. The doctor came into the room and I was told I

I was beyond nervous but eager to have the tumor removed. My surgery was successful and I was given a six - twelve week recovery. I was released from the hospital the day following my surgery. Bored at home, all I wanted to do was get back in the gym so I could try to compete at the State Championships at the end of May. Two week post-op my doctor allowed me to go to gymnastics and do light conditioning. Six weeks following my surgery I was fully cleared by my doctor to do anything as long as it didn't cause pain. I pushed myself as far as I could every practice just so I could compete at States in two weeks. Two weeks passed and I was on my way to Hampton Roads in Hampton, VA to compete with my team and twin sister at States. I had my leotard on and my hip wrapped in an ACE bandage. I watched as my teammates competed on all four events, and then I took to the floor and did the only routine I was ready for at the time- but I didn't mind not doing all of the events, because I was just happy to be able to do what I loved

I guess I just put my head down and did what I had to. I’m not a particularly positive person, but I am incredibly persistent. I decided that I was going to be able to walk without a limp and that I was going to be able to compete at diving again and that was that. It took two years, three surgeries, weekly visits to the pain clinic and over a year of physical therapy, but damn it I did it.…

When I was shadowing an osteopathic family medicine physician, Dr. Anthony Lopresti, I came to appreciate how the philosophies of osteopathy coincides with my own. Through many patient encounters, I learned of the combination of prescribed medications and musculoskeletal manipulation that enhances the body’s natural process to heal on its own. I was wavering between pursuing the two philosophies of allopathic or osteopathic that both sought to improve individuals’ lives. My passion in osteopathic medicine was confirmed when I comforted a distressed patient which made me realize how important patient satisfaction was to me. The ideal practice of medicine she spoke of also resonated my own beliefs of practicing medicine: to consider the person…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

I shadowed an orthopedic physician assistant and learned about what they do on a daily basis. While there I got to see the role that he plays in a patients care and how him and the surgeon work together as a team. I saw his perform pre and post surgical visits, aspirations and injections, interpret radiology reports, and evaluate and treat injuries. I also had the opportunity to spend about 20 hours in the operating room in which I watched both the surgeon and physician assistant perform a variety of surgeries such as total knee and hip arthroscopy’s, ACL reconstructions, knee scopes, etc.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

I could not walk and I was still in excruciating pain. My mom decided to take me to my regular doctor, where he declared that my leg was in fact, broken. Doctor Bell placed me in a boot to hold my leg in place and instructed me to use crutches. I spent three months unable to participate in any physical activity, including tumbling. When I was finally released, I slowly progressed back into tumbling classes, but all that would go through my head before I started my passes was the fear of falling again and getting hurt.…
