Personal Narrative: A Career As A Dance Technique

After last semester when I went to see the Podiatrists I thought all my problems were going to disappear. When realizing that the cortisone shot did not work, I decided that I was not going to baby my injury any more. When walking into last semester I felt that I grew tremendously from the semester before and from my Italy dance experience. After my injury my technique went downhill fast. I thought that going to physical therapy was going to help me get back to where I need to be with my ankle. During winter break I did a lot of exercises that I felt was going to help me with getting my technique back that I lost. At the end of last semester I realized that the fall semester was nothing but one large roller-coaster that I was on, and I was hoping that this semester was going to be better. During my time in Italy I took a contemporary ballet class almost every day and I truly fell in love. After seeing Charlotte Ballet Company perform I realized that contemporary ballet is where my heart is. After school when I figure out everything with my ankle I plan on auditioning for a contemporary ballet company. I have always had a love for ballet, but I know there is no way I will make it into a ballet company. I feel as a dancer I will have a better chance in making it in to a contemporary ballet company because they are not as strict on the way dancers need to look. One of my long term goals is to have a company of my own. Originally I wanted my company to be a ballet company, but the more I keep seeing contemporary Ballet companies the more I realize that this is the style I want my company to be. I always tell myself not to be as hard on myself when in class and when watching myself. I find it extremely difficult not to compare myself to others in the class, the dancer I was before my injury and the dancer I strive to be. I realize that it is not good to be so hard on myself and I need to start looking at more of my positives then at the areas when I mess up in. I feel as though if I started to have more proud moments from what I do well in class then I would perform more while in class. I found myself during the midterm think more about my head following my port be bras then I normally do since I did feel comfortable with the phrase material. From here on out I plan to practicing my performance quality while in class that way it will eventually become second nature to me. Another thing that I am going to start to focus on is holding so much tension in my neck causing me to mess up my alignment. I never realized that I did this until it was pointed out to me. I wonder if this was caused my trapezius have been so tight lately. The third thing that I will be working on for the rest of the semester is staying rooted to the floor. Last semester I realized how much I sat in my heels that now I do not sit in my heels as much but I lift off the ground to much. I need to find the happy medium between staying ground but not in my heels and being lifted but not to the point of not being connected to …show more content…
This is something that will help me standout when in an audition. I feel that I used to do very well with my performance quality but I slowly lost it as I started to focus on my technique. Now that my technique is at a decent place I feel that is it would be a good idea to go back on focusing on my performance quality since I am about to go start auditioning for places. Another goal I am going to work on for the remaining of the semester is during grand allegro is finding the up. I feel that before the injury I was able to find the up when jumping, but I lost all my power to get me off the ground. I have noticed that I think about the landing of my jumps because they make me nervous with my ankle. When performing grand Allegro I will start thinking up and not about my
