Personal Narrative: The World Of Competitive Dance

Improved Essays
“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers. Slowly, I began to get closer and closer to front and center. My sophomore and junior year in high school, I began to flourish and I was blessed with many opportunities. I was scouted by UCLA’s dance intensive program two years in a row, placed in numerous national and world competitions,

Dance is a sport I am very passionate about as I have been dancing for fifteen years. In sixth grade I decided I wanted to be a part of my school’s dance team to spread school spirit and entertain crowds during the halftime of football and basketball games. I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Dance Teams for seven years, and I have made many friendships and memories that will last forever from being a part of such a wonderful athletic team. Dance team has taught me a great deal about teamwork, dedication, and hardwork. Each of the four years that I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Varsity Dance Team, we have qualified for the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida.…

“Being exposed to dance at a later time in life, such as in college or by reading a book like this one permits you to better appreciate the incredible challenges that dance presents” (Nadel 11). Ever since I was a little girl, my parents instilled the importance of obtaining an education; therefore, every day I would go to school with the primary focus of making them proud. What I came to realize as I got older was that school is not just about getting good grades; more than that, though, it is about learning and being able to implement all my knowledge throughout the course of my daily life. The experiences I have endured throughout my years in high school have been the most crucial in the sense of allowing me to feel for what it is that I am most interested in. My extracurricular activities have helped me branch out and explore what path I want to pursue. In the midst of all these activities, I have found my true calling-- to become an anesthesiologist.…

As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…

All four years of high school I have been on the dance team. I have played on other sports teams as well but they all have one similarity;every team has a coach. To dance my passion and my teammates are my family, but sometimes coaches are cruel. Sometimes coaches pick favorites. They choose who earns a spot in the front row by who goes to their studio, or whose parents volunteer the most.…

When I started my sophomore year at Seattle Prep, I told myself I would do something challenging. I made a goal of finding something that is uncomfortable, and doing it. Sophomore year was the year I joined Pulse, Seattle Prep's dance team. Before Pulse, I have never danced for recreation, and I knew this would be a challenge. I could not even present a speech in front of a small class, I had no idea how I would be able to dance in front of the whole school.…

After I had bombed my auditions for a certain highschool dance team, I realized that while on my 4 year hiatus, I really missed dancing. The only problem is, the studio I used to go to was going under, and they were splitting into some weird private dance studio, with half the size and significantly less teachers, and there really wasn’t anything nearby. Except for the Milwaukee Ballet school. “Alice, this isn’t a recital, your hair is fine” my mother said as she drove me to my new studio. I was sitting in the passenger seat yanking my hair back into a smooth bun, desperately trying to settle the wisps of hair that flew off the crown of my head.…

This semester I was once again enrolled in DA 401. Over the course of this semester, I have worked conscientiously to improve my dancing through a concentration on various technical components. I feel like I was already more successful at some of these components than others, so I decided to focus on some of the other components that were more vital to my dancing and that I needed the most improvement in. Of the many technical aspects of ballet technique, I chose to focus on four – strength, flexibility, performance qualities, and risk. Success in each of these areas is important to being a technically advanced and well-rounded dancer, and I will continue to concentrate on these technical components in the pursuit of further advancing my ballet…

The most incredible aspect of performing dance, is its ability to resonate with yourself as a viewer, and bring you to react in a multitude of ways. I myself have always been in touch with my emotions, more so than one may probably seek to be, but in return, watching dance evokes a strong appreciation from me, because of the beauty and meaning I can find in it. The Spring Dance Theatre has been the second dance performance I have experienced, after the 12x16 dance I had watched previously in Santa Ana. Comparing the two programs, I have come to realize I prefer watching performances that consist of fewer dancers on stage. Performances that consist of large numbers of dancers are harder for me to find meaning in, most likely because I may be distracted by the many occurring instances on…

I arrived on the site about 30 minutes early because I brought my hula hoops from my apartment. I remembered what Rhonda said the goal of the garden was; “To create a spot where people could meditate, talk and relax”, and I wanted to do just that. I hoop dance and when I hoop dance, I like to do it on either an open field or open parking lot. It gives me more room to be creative and productive. I also hoped by me hooping and doing a bunch of tricks that it would attract attention and people would come up and ask more about the garden.…
