Being a college athlete I know all about managing my time between classes, practice, naps, and homework. I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

My parents helped with the costs of attending college as well as supporting me when my studies became difficult. The gymnast closed her eyes. Her arms swayed gracefully into each pose and traced the motions she was about to compete. As she visualized herself flipping four feet off the floor on a four inch beam, her body trembled and her palms perspired. Over the past 16 years of her life, she has spent four and a half hours, five days a week, 52 weeks of the year, training in the gym, for this moment. As she concluded her mental routine, the athlete smiled gently at her coach and made her way over to the beam.…
