Radiographically this presents as a diffuse radiopaque lesion, which can occur around the apex of any tooth but is often visible around posterior mandibular teeth. This condition is known as condensing osteitis and is a variant of symptomatic apical periodontitis Lesions are generally asymptomatic, but depending on whether the cause is pulpitis or pulpal necrosis, there may be a response to vitality, percussion and palpation. Root canal treatment is indicated in these cases. Acute apical abscess…

When the periodontal membrane is affected, full resectioning may require extraction of adjacent teeth. As an alternative to surgery, carbon-dioxide laser resectioning involves less intra-operative bleeding, provides wound sterilization and requires no sutures. However, laser treatment is contraindicated in cases where the lesion is oriented close to the bone and where careful curettage is required.7,10,11 No malignant variations of PGCGs have been reported, and recurrence rates have been reported to range from 4.41%– 50% with the differences in rates possibly related to the type of surgical resectioning procedure…

The frenum fibers can sometimes be attached to the periosteum and the connective tissue of the residual intermaxillary suture that might be present, while others may simply interrupt the continuity of, particularly, the interdental gingiva. It seems that the deeper within the tissues and the closer to the incisive papilla the frenum is attached, the more likely it is for it to cause a diastema. Miller et al (1985)58 recommended that the frenum should be characterized as pathologic when it is unusually wide or there is no apparent zone of attached gingiva along the midline, or the interdental papilla shifts when the frenum is…

Exposure to numerous patients provided me the opportunity to improve manual dexterity, analytical skills, and develop compassion in understanding the needs of the community. By delivering a wide array of treatments with comprehensive treatment planning in collaboration with consultants, we were successful in increasing the ratio of patients opting for root canal treatment. However, variables such as locating accessory canals and retrieval of broken files in root canals were primary concerns that needed attention. To gain practical knowledge, I started assisting renowned endodontist Dr. Swapnil Kolhe in Nasik, India. In addition to enjoying the learning experience, I recognized that it is imperative to get enrolled in a residency program to hone my skills in becoming a future…

Osteopetrosis is a clinical syndrome characterized by the failure of osteoclasts to resorb bone. As a consequence, bone modeling and remodeling are impaired. The defect in bone turnover characteristically results in skeletal fragility despite increased bone mass, and it may also cause hematopoietic insufficiency, disturbed tooth eruption, nerve entrapment syndromes, and growth impairment. Researchers have described several major types of osteopetrosis, which are usually distinguished by their pattern of inheritance: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked. The different types of the disorder can also be distinguished by the severity of their signs and symptoms.…

Periodontal disease affects 75 percent of adults in Unites States and more severe forms affect 20 to 30 percent of adults. Many epidemiologic studies suggest moderate connection between dental health status and systemic disease (Genco, 2002). Therefore, treating periodontal disease may not only help manage oral health but may also help with the management of other chronic conditions. The first nonsurgical step to treat gum disease involves subgingival scaling and root planing to remove plaque and calculus on the tooth and root surfaces. When periodontal pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, surgical procedures may be needed to gain access to the root surface.…

The common parameters that are presently used to assess the presence, distribution and severity of periodontal diseases, both in the clinical situation and in the field of research are probing pocket depth (PPD), (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PI). In addition to the clinical signs of periodontal diseases the radiographic findings also shed light on the extent and severity of the disease (7). These parameters give of past periodontal collapsing assessment rather than revealing current disease activity, and are of limited information on treatment options, prognosis, and future progression (8). • Etiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis Periodontitis is a multi-factorial disease, initiated by a complicated interplay of environmental, plaque bacterial infection and host response, where disease induction is pathogenic species colonization within tissues. Next, bacteria invades or its pathogenic products the periodontal tissues, so that, periodontal tissues start to interact with bacteria or their pathogenic products, that induce tissue damage (9).…
