Naval fleet almost destroyed the Japanese naval fleet in the battle of the Midway in June 1942. Japanese sustained heavy losses and was turned back. August 1942 American forces attacked the Japanese in the Solomon islands forcing Japanese forces to withdraw from Guadalcanal in February 1943. Allied forces slowly gained Naval and air control int the Pacific moving island to island taking them over and sustaining casualties. Britain was able to recapture Burma. In 1945 American suffered major losses in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa an island of strategic importance. Despite casualties and Kamikaze attacks America took over Okinawa in the mid of June in 1945. August 6th 1945 United states air force dropped the first Atomic bomb on Hiroshima where ten of thousands died from initial explosion and later many more died from radiation exposure. Three days later United states dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki. August 8th Soviet union also declares war on Japan and invades Japanese occupied Manchuria. After japan agreed to surrender on August 14th, 1945 American forces occupied Japan. Japan formally surrendered to United States, Britain and the Soviet Union on September 2nd 1945. Know as the battle of Philippine sea U.S. and Japanese carries fought two days in sea and air off the coast of Saipan which was one of the biggest carrier battles in WWII. Japan lost three ships and over 300 planes. Marine and Army forces fought well dug in Japanese troops. Out of 30,000 Japanese troops on the island only 1,000 remained alive when the battle came to an end on July 9th.
