For my project, I chose to make an illustration. In the picture I have a breast cancer ribbon, a pot of boiling water, a prokaryote, a chromosome, a pedigree, and a factory to represent human impact, a flower to represent photosynthesis, a food chain, an energy pyramid, an embryo, humans evolving, a biomolecules chart, and the phases of mitosis. I drew a breast cancer ribbon because we talked about different types of cancer. There are many factors that go into the diagnosis of cancer. A lot of the cancers have the same risk factors, such a nutrition and smoking. Family history plays some of a role as a risk factor, but not as big of a factor. A lot of cancer treatments are the same, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Sometimes surgery is needed to help cure the cancer. The cancer cells keep dividing and growing and it will eventually lead to death if you don’t get proper treatment. There are many different types of cancer. I drew a boiling pot of water to represent the importance of water. Water is important for many causes. Water is transported through cells by osmosis. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Water moves through cells by passive transport, facilitated diffusion, or active transport. Water moves from low solute to high solute. Water is important for cells and organisms. I drew a prokaryote to represent the different types of cells. Prokaryotes are the simplest cells and includes bacteria. Prokaryotes are divided by eubacteria and archaebacteria. If they are in the kingdom of eubacteria they are the common types of prokaryotes. Archaebacteria lives in extreme environments. Prokaryotic cells don’t have a nucleus. My project has a chromosome because all cells have chromosomes. Chromosomes are important in humans, mitosis, or meiosis. There are 46 chromosomes in humans. 23 come from each parent. The chromosomes all have variations. At the end of each chromosome, there is telomeres. Telomeres shorten as you age. The older you get, the shorter your telomeres get. There are switches on chromosomes and they help regulate genes and are in your genome. Chromosomes make new combinations in meiosis. There are chromosomal abnormalities if there is an extra or missing chromosome. Chromosomes are important. There is a pedigree in the picture because it represents genetics and inheritance. Pedigrees show how traits are passed down through generations of a family. It has males, females, parents, and children. When looking at a pedigree you can see the pattern of diseases or disorders passing through the family. There is a factory with smoke coming out of it because it represents human impact. Humans are contributing to global climate change by creating things in factories, burning fossil fuels, or driving cars. The temperature is warming up because humans are contributing to pollution and things that can be lessened to slow global warming. Humans are one of the biggest contributors to global climate change. More greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere and there are ways to lessen it. If humans change their ways, then the gases and climate change can slow down. There …show more content…
First there is a sun that gives energy to the flower, then comes the beetle, a frog, and a bird. The plant is a producer that the beetle gets energy from. The beetle is a primary consumer. The frog gets energy from the beetle and it is a secondary consumer. Lastly, the owl gets energy from the frog and is a tertiary consumer. Food chains show how energy moves through an ecosystem. A bigger food chain is a food web. Food webs show the flow of energy in an ecosystem with the organisms of a community. There is an energy pyramid to show how the percentage of producers or consumers. Energy pyramids can be made by using a food web. The bottom layer is where there are primary producers, which has 100%. There are ten percent of primary consumers, one percent of secondary consumers, and a tenth are third level consumers. Energy pyramids shows how energy flows in a community. The different levels have different organisms. There is an embryo that represents embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent; they can develop into any cell in the body. It is best used to replace tissue or body parts. A lot of different organisms have similar looking embryos.
