As a young child, Oprah was very intelligent. Her grandmother valued education and taught her to read before the age of three. The child would read the bible and recite memorized verses in front of the church congregation. Once she was five, she began kindergarten but since she was so advanced, she quickly proceeded to first grade. The following year, she advanced to third grade. When she started high school, Oprah received superior grades, which caused her middle school teacher assist her in transferring to Nicolet High School. This was an all-white high school at the time. Since Oprah spent her school days surrounded with many wealthy students, she began stealing from her mother. Once she began getting into trouble, she was sent to live with her father, Vernon winfrey, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Winfrey’s career began to form once she was in Nashville. She was an honors student at East Nashville High School and spent her free time participating in debate club, drama club, speech team, and was on student council. During her senior year, Winfrey started working at their local black radio station, WVOL. This was the beginning of her career in broadcasting. Additionally, Oprah revealed her public speaking abilities at an Elks Club speaking contest and received a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she studied speech communications and performing
