North Deconstructs Reconstruction After the devastation of the South, Reconstruction became an important objective. Not just the physical reconstruction of the South, but the reconstruction of African-Americans being allowed into society. The South retaliated in it’s own ways to stop the reconstruction such as the KKK, but the North killed reconstruction. In Document C, we see a picture of President Grant being corrupt and bribed, and with the North focusing on Grant, they lose focus on the problems they already face with the South. The North is leading themselves away, Grant is already known as the monster who physically demolished the South, and is now destroying the reconstruction. The image used depicts of an African-American men who wear suits which doesn’t seem to fit right, and makes them seem barbaric and animalistic. The literal image of a black man has been changed, by someone who supported them. Leading by example, when people see others from the North saying they are still unfit for those type of government jobs, they will think and believe it as well. The writer basically was saying that they only knew how to be slaves, and not function successfully in society. Document B says otherwise, displaying that the South killed reconstruction. Abram Colby was the Georgia State Legislator who was beat mercilessly by the KKK for hours and was also given warnings, and was told to withdraw his position through bribery. The picture shows a black man with two white men holding guns to his head. The KKK was instilling fear into the people which is a very convincing and sinister method of gaining control, very effective.
