For example, the article spoke about a man who went to therapy to talk about work issues and instead the therapist wanted to know about his childhood. When the client confronted the therapist about this issue the therapist stated, “Who is the licensed social worker? You or me?” Hence, the client felt let down and mistreated by their therapist. I learned that it is important to work with your clients and try to figure out what methods works for them and what does not. Furthermore, it is also important to understand that what works for one client may not work for the other. Hence, adjusting your therapeutic methods to meet your clients’ needs is important as well. Returning calls as soon as you can will help the client feel important. Having the client feel that they are important will help build trust and rapport within the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, the article also mentioned that many clients feel unimportant when they have an appointment schedule and they have to wait an hour or more in the waiting room. Hence, it is important that counselor set appointments at a time that they know they can keep. The article explained that when a client is left waiting for more than thirty minutes, they would not be as trusting and open to the counselor. Overall, this knowledge will influence me as a future counselor because I learned that the most important person is your client. Making your clients feel important, equal to you, and heard is what will make you prosper in your career. Hence, I will take the advice I learned from reading the article and apply it in the future.
