This paper will examine how to recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power, and how to recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice. By using self-assessment tools such as the Cultural Paradigm Survey and the Project Implicit Attitudes Tests (IATs) the author identified the strengths that she wish to enhance, and the improvement opportunities for the weaknesses that she wish to reduce or eliminate.

There were areas identified that need improvement with room for growth. The author was unaware of her subconscious biases but understands that we as humans live in an environment where society has determined what is normal or not, and subconsciously our minds hold on to what we have been conditioned to believe. The author took the test on gay verses straight a step further because the results alarmed her due to having a bisexual daughter. The author has an open relationship were communication is fluent therefore she asked her daughter her thoughts on how she perceived her mother to be around her friends who are gay. It is important for the author to not only understands one’s differences but not to allow personal biases to influence the services provided to clients served. In addition, it is important to advocate for services that would best assist the client and if personal biases interfere, understand that it will impede services. It is important to understand that the social workers values may not always fall in line with their client and/or employer (Suppes & Wells, 2013).
Values are directly associated with one’s cultural beliefs, and in turn guides behavior. Values play an integral part in choices made in life whether positive or negative. It is paramount that the author is able to recognize her personal values and ensure that they can be incorporated professional utilizing the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. This will be accomplished by completing self-assessments, attending workshops to educate on communities served, and anonymous evaluations of services received. When ethical dilemmas take place that conflict with the author’s personal values the author will refer to the NASW Code of Ethics to assist in recognizing the basis for the conflict. As the author plans for her future, she will use the awareness gained from these tools to focus on her strengths, value her own uniqueness, and use these assessments to improve her
