Chimpanzees and humans fall into the same kingdom (Animalia), phylum (Chordata), class (Mammalia), order (Primates), and family (Hominidae). Chimpanzees are animals that are similar to human beings because we are both organisms that have backbones, can maintain our own body temperature, have mammary glands, and hair/fur. Chimpanzees range anywhere from twenty seven to thirty three inches with their entire body except for is covered in a wool like fur. Their face faces are a pink or brown color and the skin on their feet and hands is black. Chimpanzees are very social beings that live in groups called communities or unit groups. They will go off in small subgroups of about ten chimps and at times some will break off and wonder or join other groups. That being said, they do not change groups often do to the close bonds that they make with their communities. Chimpanzees bonds are very strong, especially among their families like the mother and daughter. Females will leave their group once they are mature and spending most of their time with their offspring. As for males, they will normally stay in their group. Inside of a chimp community there is an established social standing with one chimp at the highest position, known as the alpha. Dominance is a big part of the chimpanzees behavior. All the adult males dominate the females. Factors that determinate dominance are fighting skills, age, physical fitness, intelligences etc. Several different studies have been done on chimpanzees, from being studied in a …show more content…
In one study a chimpanzee named Tim arrived to the San Diego zoo in 1930. In 1932 a female chimp Katie was brought into the same living environment to keep Tim company. In 1938 they had their first offspring named George. When George was born him and his mother were separated from Tim because the researchers were very worried that the newborn chimp would be harmed by the father. There was a partition put in between the chimps. It was noticed that Tim took paternal interest in his son.Tim was seen poking his fingers through the partition in attempt to reach his son. Katie and Tim missed each other and would sit next to one another with the partition in between them. Soon after the family was reunited and Tim took part in George’s upbringing. This study of the chimpanzee family has shown how chimpanzees have feelings and created bonds with one another. This shows the similarity among humans and chimpanzees. When humans are separated from their loved ones they miss each other and reach out for affection from one another. When a mother gives birth to her child there is an inseparable bond that never leaves. This is also seen in chimpanzees. A mother stays with her young until they reach maturity and are able to provide and take care of themselves and their
