Pai is a powerful girl who displays several characteristics of Mysticism throughout Whale Rider. Despite constantly being told she cannot be a leader because of her gender by her grandfather Paka, Pai knows in her heart that she can help her people. She cares very much about the people of her tribe and desperately wants to bring everyone together. She spends most of the movie trying to learn all she can about being a leader, while still respecting her grandfather as she understands that he just wants what is best for her. Women in both Antigone and Whale Rider are given little to no opportunity to express their true potential by sheer dismissal due to their gender. Often, women in Whale Rider were over-looked and given no-chance to defend themselves. When Pai attempts to associate herself with the opening of the school appointing a new tribal chief, her grandfather promptly commands her to leave because she is a, “girl go to the bank” (). Women are constantly neglected in the movie which portrays the men’s lack in societal evolution. It is passed down through generations that men are in the higher power position and women are to follow their lead.…

Chris Crutcher argues in his article, “How They Do It”, that school systems should not become easily persuaded by the parents’ complaints to censor books that should be a part of the curriculum that their children benefit from due to the fact that the students can relate, learn, and build off of the books that are censored. Crutcher builds his argument throughout his article by including the use of personal anecdotes, pathos, and repetition. Due to the fact that Crutcher includes the use of personal anecdotes, he supports his argument. He builds his argument with the use of personal stories in hope to engage the readers.…

This book is banned in many schools for its use of language and expression of racism, it is one of the most real books I have read. The story Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher discusses the topic of letting kids slide through school, as long as they are benefiting the school's sports teams, like the mens UConn basketball team has been doing recently. The conflict of prioritizing sports before school is a prominent issue in the book Whale Talk as it is in the real world, specifically on the men’s UConn basketball team. T.J. refuses to participate in school athletic teams because he hates the fact that athletes are granted special privileges because of their positions on a team. Crutcher shows T.J.’s dislike for the school's athletic department when he says, “Cutter is such a jock school. They pray before games and cajole you to play out of obligation, and fans scream obscenities…

“Women are the root of all evil.” The quote apparently usually talks about money, but it’s clearly obvious that all men would agree to this quote. In the Hindu culture, Varna was referred to as a person’s responsibility regarding their class. In the Ramayana story, Rama, a prince, was banned from his kingdom as a result of his stepmother’s actions against him being the next king.…
