What is moral courage? Well, moral courage is the courage to take action for moral reasons, despite the risk of adverse consequences. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel created in the 1930’s that explains childhood and growing up in the Southern United States. Scout Finch, who is 6 years old and her older brother, Jem Finch, both live with their father in Maycomb, Alabama. These characters spend their summers playing with their friend Dill. Many of their antics revolve around the Radley’s place where they look for Boo Radley to see if he is actually crazy. Their father, Atticus Finch on the other hand is a lawyer defending an African American, Tom Robinson, in a racist trial. This animal has many similar traits to another character. The author states "Tim Johnson was not much more than a speck in the distance, but he was closer to us. He walked erratically, as if his right legs were shorter than his left legs" (Harper 93). Firstly this dog seems to have a very similar name to Tom Robinson. In addition, it has the same injury as Tom. They both have shortened limbs. Thus, Harper Lee is foreshadowing this situation with the Tom Robinson case. They both happen unexpectedly. She wrote the novel To Kill a Mockingbird to show this theme throughout the whole novel. It also shows the growth of childhood and maturity in youth. It was written the 1960s during the Great Depression. Many racist situations and brutal laws were created during this time period. Harper Lee made sure to cooperate these courageous characters by symbolizing them and showing their ability through terrible conflicts.
