Throughout history racism has been a huge part of our lives, sending us unneeded pain and hurt. Racism has played the role of the bad guy by, tearing people apart. “Racism and injustice and violence sweep our world, bringing a tragic harvest of heartache and death” (Billy Graham). However, with racism comes bravery and courage to act on the right. Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird, was set in the 1930’s, around the time of the Great Depression, and in many ways Lee presses the issue of racism bravery and courage. Lee expresses massive amounts of messages and themes throughout the book, but the most influential deal with racism, bravery, and perspective.

Most characters during the book stand up for something they don 't at all believe or agree with, they stand up and have courage for what they believe is right. For instance Tom Robinson has a great deal of courage. Tom was accused of raping a white woman even though that was not the case. Even though he knew things were not going to go his way he was very brave through it all. He was honest and trustworthy and a very nice young man. It was tragic that tom ended up dying towards the end, because he was such a good fellow. Another character that is very brave and has gained a lot of courage is Jem. Jem in many chapters of the book protects scout, especially in the few last chapters in the book. The moment when Jem and scout were being attacked, Jem’s braveness and courage helped scout; thus when they were being attacked jem was there for scout, protecting her, giving her all the reasons to feel safer and trust Jem. Jem, and Tom are very brave, and gain a lot of courage throughout the
