Overview: the construction of the test The Millon clinical multiaxial inventory (MCMI) is a psychological inventory, which assesses individual personality, emotional adjustment, and test taking attitude. This true-false, self-report questionnaire is standardized for assessing adult population (18 years old and older) with minimum of 8th grade reading level. The first edition of the inventory was developed in 1977 for assessing personality disorders and related symptoms. The updated versions of this test were published in 1987 and then 1994. The MCMI is widely used in the clinically setting and clinical training (Groth-Marnat, 2009). The primary author of the inventory, Theodore Millon, and his publishers worked closely with each other in developing each edition of the test. It is currently in its third edition (Jolosky & Watson, 2015). The MCMI-III consists of 175 items. The test is short enough for assessing diverse …show more content…
Some clients and clinicians might prefer the MCMI that it is shorter test than MMPI2. At the same time, those tests differ in their primary focus that MMPI focuses on the axis 1 or clinical diagnoses whereas MCMI focuses on the axis 2 or personality diagnoses (Groth-Marnat, 2009). The study conducted by Van der Heuden, Egger, Rossi, and Derksen (2012) reported that there are overlaps between the MMPI2 and the MCMI-III. Shared variance between the MMPI2-RF, which is a shorter version of MMPI2, and the MCMI-III were stronger. They suggested that it might not be advantageous to use both during the same assessment. Nevertheless the MCMI as well as MMPI does not provide a diagnosis. The assessing clinician would use information from the tests to reach a diagnosis (Groth-Marnat, 2009). Millon (in Shaughnessy, 2008) noted that no single test can serve all purposes. Tests need to be used in a complimentary manner that the assessor should use multiple of assessment instruments to explore various
