The Michigan Incident Crime Reporting (MICR) Section has listed that Michigan’s auto thefts have risen 28% from 2015 to 2016. Reasons for current theft increases may include the following:

1. Anti-theft technologies have driven thieves to become more proficient in falsified paper crimes such as identity theft or false titles and documents used in the fraudulent purchases of an automobile. False identification is used in car rental companies where the thief acquires a vehicle and fails to return it.

2. The high demand and unregulated wheel and tire industry have seen an uptick in the metro Detroit area with the “push-steal” method. This entails rolling a vehicle a few blocks where the thieves steal only the wheels and tires, often not even making entry into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. D/Lt. Ray Collins of the South East Auto Theft Team (SEATT) reports that on various separate occasions’ large sums of cash and handguns have been left behind in the stolen vehicle and the only thing that was taken were the wheels and

Older vehicles in Michigan often require vehicle parts for repair. The illegal black market for these parts and the ability to steal older cars is also a contributing factor in the rise of auto theft cases.

4. A 2016 National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) report showed that Michigan ranked sixth in the U.S. for cars stolen when the key fob was left inside the vehicle. Michigan had 7,037 car thefts where owners admitted to leaving the keys inside the vehicle from 2013-2015. Metro Detroit was the second highest number of this kind of theft nationwide with 4,380 thefts.

5. D/Lt. Russ Ammon of the Southwest Commercial Auto Recovery (SCAR) team is reporting that there is a significant rise in the theft of vehicles in urban areas that have been left running with the keys in the ignition of inside the vehicle. Currently the SCAR team has been conducting bait car stings in the problem hot spots to target the suspects

What caused Detroit's descent from a wealthy, vital city into one where "ruins" are common and the city is bankrupt? The lack of care and concern from the people who are in the charge of the city and its people. Despite all of these attractions, the city is still in ruins and is still in major debt.…

Before proposing ways to fix any wrongful behavior, I believe it is important to identify both the victims and offenders to get a better understanding why a certain crime is happening. For the first two scenarios dealing with the University and the parking problems, the offenders seem to be young people and/or students doing anything to make ends meat. These criminals will most likely have no guidance or supervision which gives them all the opportunity and time to create any such crime. I came up with a few solutions for a student who commutes to the university to try and avoid all crime.…
