In contrast to the US side of the wall at Friendship Circle, the Mexico side is painted with bright colors, symbols and words. There are two things that stood out for me. The first is the upside down flag. I had just learn its meaning when we were on the border patrol tour. I agree with the deported US veterans—they are in distress. But I am not sure if the American people really knows who are being deported. These are stories that are untold. The other symbol is the “empathy” sign on the top of the gate. I believe it speaks to what the US is not. We have become a people of selfishness. We are only concerned with our own lives. There is little room for empathy towards others. All I can say is “God help us.” Leslie, Jonathan and I spent time together on the beach taking pictures and collecting rocks. We all go along so well. I believe we bonded so easily because we came on the trip with open minds and open hearts.
