Personal Narrative: My Visit To Spanish

Decent Essays
My project consisted in broke a cultural norm about language. I visited some shops whit the idea to speak in Spanish and not in English with cashiers at the moment to pay for some of my items.
I visited three places in Lansing: Target, Wal-Mart, and Meijer.

During my visit in Target at the moment of pay my items I was assisted by a young lady, she was around twenty-five, was blond and a little shy. When I arrived at her workplace I introduced myself in Spanish, and I explained to her, in Spanish, that I wanted to buy all that stuff. The first part of my introduction she just looks at me trying to figure it out what I was saying, when I said in Spanish that I wanted to pay for my items, she was red and doubting about what to say, she tried to says something but just took my items and she scanned them. Well, the moment was a very awkward for her, but was a surprise

When I was approaching to pay some things, the cashier that was greeting me was a lady around the fifties, she was very gentle. When she was greeting me in English, I answer in Spanish. In the beginning, she was surprised, a little nervous but she never stop to smile and be gentle, actually she was very close to laughing with the situation because every time that she gave me an instruction or offers me something I responded in Spanish. At the last moment that I was with her she never stop to smile and be gentle, that make me think that maybe she knew something of Spanish.

Well, in conclusion, I had different reactions to different people. I know that for North Americans awkward moments are something that they try to avoid, and it is a bit difficult to handle. But also was a good exercise for me, trying to understand that the language barrier is not something that is complicated for the person that can not or is not speaking the language of the country where you are living but also for people that cannot speak your language, could be frustrating or challenging for

In that moment was the beginning of something new. Learning that a language can shape me as a person and be the center of my relationships with people. After my first day of school I went home and barely spoke about my day. I was embarrassed, I did not have any friends, it was impossible to make any. Every time the teacher called on me to answer a question I would respond with “que?”…

The folkway violation that I chose to do is to interrupt people's conversations. I wanted to see how people would react and what would they say and or do. I did this to a couple then I did this to a group of sophomores to see their reactions. Then I did it to grown ups A reason why I chose to do it in the library is that there is always people in there. Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

We are sometimes only able to see the things that we do not have and overlook the things that we do. We take for granted things like freedom, equality, and being able to gain an education. Many forget that these things are not guaranteed to others that live in different places. I realized how fortunate I am to live in America when I met someone from another country.…

I can still remember the first day of school. Not the normal first day of school when your mom guides you to your kindergarten classroom, but the first day of school in America. A wave of terror overcame every nerve in my body and my face tensed up as I strutted across the front of my English class. At the time, I was at El Paso Community College and more nervous and anxious now than I was a few months ago when my family first made the move from Juarez, Mexico, to El Paso. I wasn’t completely new to the area or the American way of living since I was born in El Paso, but moved to Mexico shortly after birth.…

When working at the food pantry, people would come in and grab something and I noticed that many of them were foreigners. I specifically remember one incident in which a man came in said hello very politely and grabbed a brown paper bag. He initiated a conversation with me and my friend, even though his English was not good, and I noticed how grateful he was for having the food pantry in the campus. He asked us for any recommendations and we gave him a cake mix, and his reaction surprised me because it looked like he had never seen one before.…

    1) Communication Event: Three summers ago I left the country for the first time. I was provided this opportunity when I was offered a job to work in Spain. My job was to speak English with the campers, so that they could practice their second language (English) speaking skills. During my Skype interview before going to Spain, I made it very clear to my soon-to-be bosses that I had very little knowledge of Spanish. To my surprise, this was actually preferred so that the campers would be forced to practice their English with me instead of speaking Spanish with me.…

The First Day of High School April 13, 2009 was just another ordinary day to everyone, but for me it was a very special day, because it was my first day in Crawford High School and the very first school I have ever attended since I came to United States. I vividly remember that morning, I woke up at 5:30 am, and I’ve never been so happy and excited since I came here. After I ate my breakfast and got ready for school, I asked my parents to walk me to school. I was finally on my way to school; I took a deep breath of fresh air and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine of San Diego. What a beautiful day for a fresh start of my education, so my mind was fulfilled with joy.…
