Mcluhan's Essay: The Medium Is The Message

Improved Essays
McLuhan states that, “Our conventional response to all media, namely that is how they are used that counts, is the numb stance of the technological idiot. For the ‘content’ of a medium is like the juicy piece of meat carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind.” People are susceptible to everything they see and hear. They will believe and do almost anything the media tells them to. +Using the foundation of McLuhan’s essay “The Medium is the Message,” one can see how certain mediums affect our reactions through daily encounters. *The internet, fashion, and video games are all considered “hot” mediums, meaning they are high in definition but low in audience participation.
The internet is one of the biggest resources for the media. Almost every single person in this generation uses the internet and social media has taken over by storm. People are easily influenced by the media especially on the internet. It began with Facebook, then Twitter and Instagram came about and soon took over the minds of the younger generations. We use these social media sites to express who we are and our feelings. However, the internet can be bad for the younger generation. First of all, children would rather stay indoors on the internet than go outside and play and get exercise. This is extremely unhealthy and is a major cause in the rise of childhood obesity. Also, companies use the internet to try and persuade people to think like them, such as new websites. These news websites will write articles about who they think should be president and they use certain rhetoric that will persuade you to think like them. On Facebook recently, I have seen a lot of people posting their opinions about what has happened in Ferguson, Missouri. I have seen supporters for the officer and supporters for Mike Brown, both of which have had their own evidence supporting their decision. However, some of the information may not have been completely true, but to someone reading their posts they may not know that and form an opinion based on biased views. Also, I have seen a lot of celebrities taking sides on what has been going on in Ferguson. Someone may see their favorite celebrity supporting a side and they are now more inclined to support the same view as the celebrity. The internet was revolutionary but I do not think that it is worth all the negative effects it has on society. Fashion has had a lot of influence on the population since people started wearing clothes. Back in the eighteenth century fashion was all about who had the tallest hair and biggest dress. Fashion was seen as a tell tale sign of wealth and it is still that way today. Girls and guys dream of wearing high end fashion designer clothes like Marc Jacobs

Young boys and girls have developed a love for playing video games. Some love them so much they barely leave their room. Grand Theft Auto has released multiple versions of their game and has just recently released its fifth version. This game promotes violence and reckless driving to future drivers. In this game people are shot and killed, pulled out of their vehicles, and they are exposed to drugs. This is not a good a good example for kids that are just barely teenagers or even younger. Kids should not be exposed to the buying and selling of drugs and killing of innocent people. Kids with mental disorders may also be affected in a negative way by thinking that it is okay to be violent towards people because they do not know any better. Another extremely violent video game is Assassin’s Creed. This game franchise has come out with many sub-divisions with different storylines; however, the game is fixed around an assassin. This game is tremendously violent because the main character is trained to murder people. Kids are also exposed to different types of weapons such as guns and knives which could make them more likely to want to shoot a gun. Even the Super Mario games are violent because it shows Mario punching, kicking, and destroying his attackers. Video games have become very popular despite having such violent plot

Video games are also being blamed for inspiring countless acts of horrific crimes such as mass shootings, and murder which most of the time is unjustified and makes no sense.
