Success in Charleston, SC started with the key leadership of Mayor Joseph Riley. His success has been measured by his ability to create a model community with sustainable and affordable living. A model that other leaders in communities across the U.S. are following to this day. He redeveloped the economy and revitalized Downtown Charleston. Downtown Charleston can be enjoyed by the entire community. No matter your age, race, religion, or income. Downtown is a place for everyone, a place for people to interact. In my opinion, Mayor Riley has created a desirable community and and it's no wonder why leaders throughout the U.S. are following his approach to success.
As far as failure is concerned, I can pinpoint any flaws in Mayor Riley's efforts. My only judgement is due to the fact that Charleston is now a highly desired place to live, that could create a population boom. In a city that has focused on small businesses as way helping create a sense of community, what are Mayor Riley's plans on bringing in a few major corporations in order to create jobs to employ a population boom? The leaders involved include Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, individual Aldermen, and other Public officials. Chicago's leaders can learn from the leaders of Charleston and Elgin in the sense that they actually care about making changes. They put together plans to change and use community partnerships and leverage the government to get involved through policy. It seems that an issue with Chicago's public officials is the fact that they are just trying to get re-elected. Instead of focusing on creating real change and letting results speak for themselves.
