For one, she had moved from Stamps to California to live with her mother Vivian. At age 17, Maya became pregnant unexpectedly with a baby boy. She was initially a nervous mother due to the fact she wasn’t prepared for motherhood, but Maya’s own mother was there to help out along the way. Once the baby was born, Maya was terrified at the idea of allowing the baby to sleep in her bed. Maya’s mother would repeatedly attempt to ask Maya to give the idea a chance. Finally, Maya took her mother's advice and agreed to let the baby sleep in her bed for a night. This is what happened:
“She turned the light on and said, “Look at the baby.” My fears were so powerful I couldn’t move to look at the center of the bed. She said again, “Look at the baby.” I didn’t hear sadness in her voice, and that helped me to break the bonds of terror. The baby was no longer in the center of the bed. At first I thought he had moved. But after closer investigation, I found that I was lying on my stomach with my arm bent at a right angle.
