Shea: The indicator we chose for this project was Nitrogen.
Anjuna: Nitrogen is a chemical found in fertilizers, air pollution, factories, homes, and septic tanks. It dissolves in the run off and becomes part of the Chesapeake Bay.
Then it feeds algae, which blocks sunlight from plants and animals then during decomposition, creates dead zones that steal the oxygen from the plants and animals. It kills the animals and plants which disturbs the ecosystem. If more dead zones keep appearing the entire Bay will be destroyed and the ecosystem will be extremely unbalanced.
Ava: Nitrogen pollution mostly known as fertilizer, gets dumped into the chesapeake bay which contaminates the water.
The fertilizer carries harmful pollutants. …show more content…
Right now the score of the Chesapeake is a “C” which is average. But, a “C” is a pretty good score.
Ava: The score is a little low but the state is doing
In 2014 the score was a 32% which was a “D-” so we have made some improvements.
They also have a score of “Water quality indicator score have improved significantly over the 2008 and 2010 scores.” (N.p., n.d. Web.)
Ava Well, since nitrogen is found in fertilizers and other agricultural products there is no stopping it from reaching other parts of the Bay.
Other parts of the bay could be doing better or worse. But, if the dead zones keep appearing then the bay is in danger.
Shea: Some people in Frederick county do not test their soil before putting fertilizer in it. If you test it, and put in just the right amount, it will reduce the amount of nitrogen runoff. Also, some people do not pick up after their pet’s waste. If they did, it would reduce nitrogen runoff. Also, people who live by a creek should not mow their lawn all the way to the edge, they should let grass and trees grow on the edge to prevent any runoff of nitrogen or …show more content…
It helps when you leave the grass clippings on your grass when you mow the lawn, because it releases nitrogen into the soil, to make plants require less fertilizer. Use plants native to Maryland, because they will require less water, and are better for the environment.
Shea: Nobody really lives that close to a creek in Frederick county, so mowing the lawn to the edge probably wouldn’t be an issue, but most people who do live near creeks or streams usually wouldn’t think to leave a little space while mowing the lawn. Also, people have dogs. Sometimes, with a fenced in backyard, the dog will go to the bathroom, but the owner wouldn’t notice. If people paid more attention, they could clean it up before it got to the ground or even a stream.
Anjuna: There is Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint that was made in 2010 and there is the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load which is a program made in
