Emotion as Color: Analysis of The Restaurant “ La Machine” at Bougival
Artistic styles and compositional preferences have changed drastically over the course of history. Cultural progression, technological advancements, and spiritual preference have all played a major role in the fluctuating artistic styles over the years, however Fauvism marks a unique era for artistic expression. Fauvism was a style that developed and flourished in France around the start of the 20th century. This non-naturalistic style was easily identifiable, utilizing brilliant colors and dynamic brushwork to create truly expressionistic pieces. Vlaminck loved to paint landscapes, and his use of vivid colors provides a truly remarkable environment for the spectator to enjoy. There is a strong use of red, green, yellow, and blue hues, and the colors clash energetically to create an explosion on the canvas. The bright reds of the tree and the restaurant façade burn like fire against the yellow and green that surround it. The use of red is common in the food industry for it psychological effects on hunger, and it is very fitting as the primary color of the “La Machine” restaurant motif. To a new eye, the craftsmanship may seem sloppy, especially because of the apparently flat effect that this style creates on the canvas. It was here that spectators first laid eyes on this artistic style, and the term Fauve, meaning “wild beasts”, was coined as a result of the disgust that people felt towards the style (“Restaurant de la Machine”, 2009).
