Northouse (2016), defines “leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p. 6). When selecting an individual as a leader, this should be Sandra’s first and foremost thought, not only is she picking a person to get the job done but she is hiring someone that will influence others the assist with accomplishing the workplace goal as well. According to Northouse (2016), “major leadership traits of a leader should include intelligence, determination, self-confidence, integrity, and sociability” (p. 23). The candidate that possesses these qualities is Kelsey Metts. Kelsey has proved her ability to succeed as the New Director of Research at Great Lakes Foods through her education and her workplace performance. Though it seems that Kelsey is the candidate that has been with GLF the least amount of time, she has taken steps to solidify her presence such as utilizing her social skills to build substantial relationships not only with her co-workers but upper management. She has used her intelligence, determination, and self-confidence to bring to new two successful product lines to GLF. It allows a candidate’s skillset to be measured tangibly, and it eliminates outside partiality with the selection of contenders. A leader should be a well-rounded individual. He or she should not only possess skills or abilities related to professionalism, but he or she should also possess personal traits. Personal traits will assist with the effectiveness of leading and policy making. If the candidates do not possess suitable traits of character, this could result in failure as a leader.
