The Three-Skill Approach, researched exhaustively by Robert Katz, takes into account a leader’s technical, human, and conceptual skill and is the cornerstone of the Skills Approach. The Three-Skill Approach has played out in in my experience with Joni and Friends Family Retreat, where I have served as a Short Term Missionary every summer since 2012. Family Retreat is a retreat designed for families affected by special needs to be served by people who enjoy serving people with special needs and their families.From my experience, I have learned and matured my Technical Human Skill of working closely with and having relationships with people with special needs. This approach measures a leaders task and relationship behaviors on a one (low) to nine (high) scale and cateorgizes the leader into one of five categories.In my work history, I worked for a gentleman at a coffee shop in Ann Arbor who I categorize as an “Authority-Compliance Manager, a leader who places most of the importance on the task and getting the job done. My boss at the coffee shop was concerned about the sales and how customers were being treated, but did not communicate with his employees unless it was absolutely necessary and only about business.
