Katherine Johnson's Career

Even the smartest women at NASA, like Johnson, got stuck doing repetitive work and had to get over the low expectations that were set for them (142-143). Johnson did not let these ideals bother her (142-143). She would continue to push through them, by advancing her career. An example of this took place when Johnson was assigned to prepare charts for the space technology lectures (140-144). During this time, the workers on the project would meet to present information on a range of things about aeronautics (140-144). When Johnson asked if she could attend a meeting, she was turned down, and was told that girls, especially blacks, were not allowed in meetings (140-144). When Katherine questioned why, the answer she received was that it was just how things were done (140-144). After countless days of questioning and encouraging her white male coworkers to let her sit in on a meeting, she finally got the chance to accompany them during a meeting in 1958 (140-144). One of which was her tremendous determination and intelligence while receiving her education and advancing her career. Johnson pushed through the challenges that were in front of her and was able to receive a high education which lead to working at NASA as a Mathematician. While proving her knowledge throughout her lifetime, Johnson had plenty of courage that was needed to make it possible for her to rise above the beliefs of her white colleges. By doing this, Johnson began the trend at NASA to eliminate racial and sexist policies. Even though Johnson needed to prove her intelligence through determination and courage, she conquered many tasks at NASA, some being mathematic problems and others being racist and sexist issues. Through this, Johnson would continue pushing herself forward. This, in the end, allowed her to watch a steel rocket
