Katherine Johnson's Hidden Figures

Hearing that a woman discovered mathematical equations to use in space launch for NASA, is surprising today. In 1961 it was even more astonishing, almost to the point of impossibility. In Hidden Figures, Katherine Johnson calculates the math to properly and safely launch and land John Glen from his orbit around earth. In addition to Katherine, this movie focuses on two other women, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson, and their contributions to Friendship 7 and NASA. During this time it was rare for a woman to work at NASA, much less be a black female working for NASA, all of which these three women did with pride and confidence. Secret History was written by Mary Hassal in a series of letters to her Uncle, who was the Vice-President of the United States. The letters are her observations of what life was like in the Caribbean and in particularly, they were about the nobility and the women in St. Domingue. The letters sent from Hassal to her Uncle appear to be letters that allow the government in the United States to keep track of what is going on in the Caribbean. Because of this, it can be inferred that she is a spy from the U.S. even though she may not know it. Her observations are about what life is like for the Creoles, and non-Creoles, the positions of women in society, and what life was like in the urban areas and in the rural areas.…

The work of Susan Griffin is unique, and it may not be easily to classify it in the existing genres of literature. When one goes through her work for the first time, it is easy to assume that it is a novel, a story about her past. However, it becomes clear as one continues to read her work that this is not just a simple novel meant to entertain her audience using fiction. The details she provides about various events and the manner in which she chooses her words clearly points out that this is not a work of fiction. She narrates about her past experiences and how she related to people around her in a way that makes one believe that the work could even be an autobiography.…

It is hard to imagine what it is like to live in the slums without actually visiting and observing it. However, not everyone gets the opportunity to have this experience; and thus, the best replacement would be to read Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers. As we progress into the second half this semester the Crunk Feminist Collection was the beginning of a more contemporary style of writing, and if I might say a much more relatable read from my experience. The entirety of the Crunk Feminist Collection was appealing to me, hearing voices of individuals of color was refreshing, learning more about the experiences, challenges, and perspectives they have had in their lives was interesting and challenging at times. In this collection, there were many articles that have lingered in my thoughts. One, in particular, was Working While Black, this was an article I had to come back to several times to unpack and to deconstruct on a deeper level.…
