Written out Speech for class
Today I am going to teach you how to be a Pirate. Kind of… I am going to teach you something that all pirates would have known. What is Tacking, and how does it apply to sailing? And no, it is not what the RA’s gave me during room checks the other day. (At This point I will reference the slide that I have on the board. RB means I will be referencing the board during this time) If there is one thing about sailing that you should know, it is you cannot sail into the wind (RB), Physics does not allow it. When you try to sail into the wind the sails flap like crazy and you start drifting backwards. So if Steve here (RB) is sailing up on the port, or left side of the wind, and he wants to reach a point …show more content…
There are 5 basic steps to perform a tack correctly. The first step involves the skipper. He has to let his crew know he wants to tack. He does this by yelling “READY ABOUT.” Next the crew, will yell back “READY” when they are all ready. (which I will ask the class to shout back READY during the demonstration). After this, the skipper says “HARD TO LEE” which means hard to leeward. Leeward is the side the sails are on (RB). The skipper then pushes the tiller toward the sail and passes the tiller behind his back, always looking forwards and keeping his head low. Last, he centers the tiller, and boom, you have tacked. Now, let’s see this in action. I want all of you to yell ready after Sanzo yells ready about. (Sanzo will be helping me, He will be the one tacking using my props which I will be holding. One of my props will be the tiller and the other the boom. He run through the steps of tacking. Depending on how it goes with the crowd/ time I may have him do it twice, once slow and once normal speed.) Step 1. (Sanzo will yell Ready about) Step 2. (I will point and the crowd and hopefully they will yell “Ready) Step 3. (Sanzo will push the tiller over after he yells hard to lee and switch sides) Step 4. (Sanzo will switch sides passing the tiller behind his back) Notice how he keeps his eyes forward and head low the entire time. This is so he does not get hit by the boom (one
