Being the first of fifteen children, John Marshall was already a natural leader. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, a successful lawyer, and secretary and most importantly Chief Justice of the United States of America. He was a well-respected man that played important roles throughout his life. A major influence in his teenage years was his father’s good friend, George Washington. John Marshall’s young inspirations, military background, and powerful government leadership led him to be an important figure in U.S. history.
John Marshall’s life began September 24th, 1755 in Fauquier County near Germantown, Virginia. He was the first child of Thomas Marshall and Mary Randolph Keith. Thomas Marshall, was a land surveyor and worked with George Washington to survey the Fairfax Estate. His mother took care of his fourteen siblings at home. He was appointed lieutenant of the state militia called the Culpeper Minutemen. The Culpeper Minutemen was then taken in by the Continental Army’s 11th Regiment of Virginia. The Culpeper Minutemen won the Battle of Great Bridge and freed Virginia from British rule December 9th, 1775. John Marshall became an officer of the Continental Army’s 3rd Regiment of Virginia.
