John Dowland's Life Of The Renaissance Era

The British composer, singer, and lutenist John Dowland was born in London Westminster in 1563 AD. There is still uncertainty of this man, who takes part of the Renaissance Era, exact birth date, but just like him many other composers from the Renaissance Era fall into the same situation. Not a lot is known from his childhood history, but it is known that he had a boy named Robert Dowland who took his same career path as a lutenist and composer. As to his wife’s name and/or proof of any other children, that still remains a question today. Died at the age of 63 in the year 1626, but throughout his life he became to be known as a virtuoso lutenist, skilled singer, and one of the most famous musicians of his time.

Like stated earlier there is not a lot known about his personal life, but it is believed that it was during this time when he married and formed his very own family. However, since he had to work hard to feed his family like any other man, he was obligated to stayed away from his family for long periods of time leaving them at their home in England while he worked on the Continent. In England during the year of 1594, he applied for a position in the English court as a lutenist but was declined for the job. As disappointing this must of been for him, that did not stop him and he continued to find ways to make his indulge his career. Every three years he released the second and third book. Within a total of nine years his collection of book of ayres for voice & lute was done. Second book of ayres for voice & lute, published 1600 and Third book of ayres for voice & lute, published 1603. A year later in 1604 he published Lachrimae or also known as Seven Tears. This collection contains twenty-one pieces and were dedicated to the sacred Princess Anna Queen of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland. Last, but not least, another major work by Dowland has to be A Pilgrims Solace — a collection of works for voice and lute, which was published in the year 1612. This work contains also twenty-one pieces and was composed in London. This work was dedicated to Theophilus, Lord Walden, who was the Second Earl of Suffolk, an English nobleman and politician. When listened to, it is easily known that the genres that are found in this work would be sacred songs.
