John Doe Substance Abuse

John Doe lived with his mother and grandmother, Ms. Jennifer Johnson, from birth until the age of 4. John and his mother moved out of Ms. Johnson’s home in 2007, but John moved back in 2008. In the second grade, John claimed he lived in a foster home for 6 months, but there are no other accounts to verify this information. From 2009 until 2013, John bounced between living with his mother and Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson became John’s legal guardian when he was 13 years old. In 2014, a month after living with his mother and her boyfriend, John was brought to a State Hospital and then transferred to a Town Hospital due to unavailable bed space. When they are present, however, they are not attuned to John’s feelings, needs, or desires. Mr. Doe displays minimal levels of affective attunement towards John. Ms. Johnson reports that while under Mr. Doe’s care, John experienced a violent outburst when he was hungry, but his father did not want him to eat anymore. John’s mother is also poorly attuned to John due to her lack of involvement in his life. John’s mother has made it known that she does not want to deal with John, nor does she want him. John reported that his mother would hit him anytime he would not listen to her. Furthermore, John stated that he had wanted to live with his mother, but she rejected him, which indicates that she is not attuned to John’s needs or desires. Ms. Johnson appears to be the most attuned towards John. Ms. Johnson is capable of understanding John’s current emotional states better than his parents can. John’s mother and father have proven to be ineffective in helping John to regulate his emotions and behaviors. Ms. Johnson reports that when John’s parents were stressed or challenged, they would respond with physical discipline. Mr. Doe often picks verbal and physical fights with John, and his mother shows signs of struggling to control his behavior. When John was young, his parents relied heavily on Ms. Johnson for assistance, but that dynamic has since changed. Ms. Johnson is now the legal guardian and receives minimal, if any, help from John’s parents. In the past, Ms. Johnson did not agree with John taking medication for his behavioral problems, so she did not enforce John to take them. Overtime, Ms. Johnson has come to realize that John needs help with his mental health. Therefore, Ms. Johnson has accepted that John needs to attend therapy and that he needs a residential placement, because she is unable to effectively regulate John’s behavior when he becomes agitated, irritated, and aggressive. Ms. Johnson has also made note that if John is prescribed medication, she will see to it that he takes the medication this time.
