1. John, one of the main characters, feels guilty because he masturbated in the boy’s bathroom at school. Masturbating, is not something John should be ashamed of, it’s a natural occurrence that shouldn’t be frowned upon. It lets out sexual frustration by yourself instead of on another man or woman. Throughout the book, John struggles with religion, his religion forbids a man and woman to conjugate before marriage, as demonstrated in the beginning of the book with the Elisha and Ella Mae scandal. Now, in modern times, it seems natural to have sex before marriage but John, the seemingly ideal son of a pastor, thinks that all forms of exploring sexuality is forbidden which is inaccurate and backwards even in his time.
2. John’s father, Gabriel, yells at his wife, Elizabeth, for not taking better care of their children, following the event where Roy gets shot. Gabriel’s backwards thinking is the reason their are ignorant people in the world. Although it is 1935 in the novel, Gabriel should understand the atrocious ways he is treating his wife, a black woman. Gabriel himself is an African American pastor who deals with bigotry daily due to his skin pigmentation and his choice in profession, he shouldn’t take it out on his wife and kids. The bible teaches man to treat your spouse by helping them in chores if needed. If Gabriel has a problem with the way a mother of four handles her kids then maybe he should help sometimes or even spend a day in her shoes. 3.

This quote resonates within oneself because it produces such a troubling thought. If a child dies because of the large amount of sin in them passed from their mother, do they burn in hell? Even though they can’t think for themselves at such an early stage in life, are they in limbo, AKA purgatory, according to the Catholics? Can mothers be saved for sending their innocent baby to Hell? All of these questions could be found in the Bible, however, it just seems counterintuitive for Christian belief to sentence an innocent child to Hell for the sins their mother committed.
4. Page 136 of Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin, is full of descriptive and powerful imagery of sin. The way that sin is described by Gabriel, entices even the most loyal Christian. Coupled with references from the Bible, and juxtaposition of words such as “not belief but unbelief, not humility but pride” (136). Gabriel’s preaching brought tears to many eyes and even seduced another member into the Temple of the Fire Baptized. Although it wouldn’t convince a reader to convert to Christianity, it still preaches to the believers of the Lord and Jesus Christ. 5. Elizabeth’s aunt tells Elizabeth this when Elizabeth expresses the desire to leave her hometown and take her father with her to wherever she goes. Elizabeth’s aunt’s excuse is an insult to God and herself. God would not want a believer of his to be selfish and keep Elizabeth around for their own selfish reason. If the main component of Christianity is to please God then they’re wrong. The only thing a Christian has to do to be ensured a spot in heaven is to believe that Jesus died for their sins and is their lord and saviour. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, interpersonal conflict and private turmoil give rise to the Salem Witch Hunts. Among the private agonies that Miller’s characters face is the inability to express their sexuality. Sexual repression is defined as a state in which a person is prevented from expressing their own sexuality. Sexual repression is often associated with feelings of guilt or shame being associated with sexual impulses. Sexual repression plays a negative role on the characters throughout the play’s development and action by generating communal controversies, creating victims of innocent populations, and establishing greater infidelity and sexual strain.…

By incorporating biblical characters and explaining their roles in the Bible, Edwards ventriloquizes his ideas into the mouth of the “apostle James”(puritansermons.com). Edwards writes, However, James is clear that although this belief a good thing, it is definitely not proof that a person is saved. What he means is this: "You say you are a Christian and you are in God 's favor. You think God will let you into heaven, and the proof of it is, you believe in God.…

Jacqueline Murray, the professor of Department of History at University of Windsor, shows how women emerge in the thirteenth-century manuals as a ’marked’ category defined by their reproductive and sexual functions, viewed above all in terms of how their own sexual status (widow, wife, virgin, prostitute) contributes to the evaluation of males who commit sexual sin with them. ( 13) The Wife thinks that the virginity is not very important because our bodies were given us to use. She despises virginity but she does not tell anyone. The Wife speaks about sexuality in natural way which is very brave and unusual in her century.…

In the 1700s, during the Great Awakening hundreds of people were accepting Jesus Christ and becoming born again. During this time, pastors were working to increase this number and convert more and more people. One of these pastors was Jonathan Edwards, who gave intensely persuasive sermons. In one of Edwards’s most famous sermons "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” he utilizes rhetorical appeals: pathos, to appeal to the congregation’s fear; logos, to appeal to congregation’s common sense and logic; and ethos to gain the congregation’s trust throughout his sermon to assist him in persuading the congregation to become born again. Through his fire and brimstone teachings, Edwards evokes an immense amount of fear in his listeners.…
