Jealousy: The Absence Of Gender Stereotypes

This is where the scum of the earth goes to die. Under the buzzing glow of electric street lamps, Scarlet women glide like snakes, ready to pounce on any unsuspecting mouse that finds he has wandered onto the wrong street. Locals have taken to calling it “two-bit” street, cheap and dirty. The only people who don’t mind being seen on two-bit are the types who can be bought of by some sweet words and free liquor; just the type I love to pump for information. The summer night is sweltering, with the kind of heat that seems to lean over and press against you. I pull my hat low over my eyes and adjusted the buttons of my suit. A trained eye might catch the slight flounce in my walk, but that is hardly enough to betray my gender. As uncomfortable as it is, dressing as a man is a necessary precaution. Women tend to inspire jealousy in other women, a men never want to speak of important things with a pretty young face. I smile as an old friend sashayed her way out of the shadows. “Why hello, Mr. Larkin.” Miss Lily chirps in a voice as sweet as honey. I can’t help but wonder what she would think if she knew that her dear friend James Larkin also responds to the name Robin Young. Then again, it takes a lot to shock Miss Lily. “Hello, Lily. May I have the honor of walking you to the Deseret Trading Post?” …show more content…
One quick lean on a certain grain barrel and we are gliding down the stairs into Brother Archie’s Swing & Sin. We take a table, sinking into the purple velvet chairs. A little doll on the stage is singing a humorous tune about how her lover left her for a good girl, who turned out to be another cabaret singer. Red faced men and women are chortling behind their hands, pretending to be shocked. I wave down a waiter. Cherry moonshine for the lady, plain soda water for the lady dressed as a man. A woman dressed up in women’s clothing to take a photo, nothing appears out of ordinary with that analysis. That initial misconception clarifies itself in the first narrative box when Bechdel says “he’s wearing a women’s bathing suit” (120). Her use of the possessive nouns “he’s” and “women’s” shows that it was a man dressed in women’s attire in the photo (120). Those contrasting pronouns cause an emotional reaction from a reader such as confusion, disgust, or curiosity. A reader may react with “A man should not be wearing women’s clothing!”…

IMPETUS: the force by which a body moves. A single flickering street lamp illuminated the abandoned streets below. Ash danced on the wind, interrupted by the charred, black skeletons of what had once been sturdy foundations to village houses, coating the parts of the street where there was still gasoline with burnt memories. It settled on the occasional corpse, mimicking skin where the muscle had been touched by fire, drawing halos of gray chalk around the shattered skulls of innocents that had died escaping before the flames could claim them.…

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

Once she looks like a man, it is only a matter of behaving like one. The morning Jess notices she might be able to pass, she tests it out by going to the barbershop. Here she is delightfully greeted as “sir” and “[tries] to hide [her] excitement as [she] leafed through a copy of Popular Mechanics” (172). She was a man on the outside, but “no longer [her] on the inside” (173). Jess is only a man in the sense she looks and acts as if she is one.…

When it comes to the topic of jealousy, most of us can probably agree that it is a feeling we all experienced before whether it was in a romantic relationship or a friendship. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is the question of whether or not jealousy is inborn or learned. Whereas some are convinced that jealousy is a natural feeling, others maintain that jealousy is "the artificial result of an artificial cause" (Goldman 2). Emma Goldman, in her essay "Jealousy: Causes and a Possible Cure", argues that jealousy is not natural but an unnatural feeling. (2).…

When referring to jealousy as a threat in a current relationship, Dr. Gleason defines jealousy as the unhappy combination of hurt, anger, and fear that occurs when people face potential loss of a valued relationship to a real or imagined rival. In the popular show Friends, we see how jealousy takes over the emotions of one of the characters. The perception of the multifaced emotion has evolved through the recent time periods. Jealousy can be detrimental for relationships when one person perceives the threat and the other one does not. Both positive and negative views have been taken from the emotion over time.…

Determining the source of your jealousy There are few people on earth who can lay claim to immunity from the emotional and negative causes or effects of jealousy. Jealousy is a poison; a feeling that often feeds on other feelings such as insecurity and low self-esteem. For my field notes, I was a participant observer amongst a similarly classified group of people (fraternity life), in three different scenarios. The first scenario was at a Greek philanthropy event, hosted jointly by a fraternity and a sorority, with the goal of raising funds for UConn’s Violence Against Women Protection Program. My second experience as a participant observer was at an open fraternity party, meaning that any outside guests were theoretically welcome to attend. Lastly, I attended a fraternity date night, which is when each fraternity member can invite one date to the otherwise typical house party.…
