The advancement of chemicals such as chloroform and nitrous oxide began to progress from the inventions by James Young and Joseph Priestly. …show more content…
These discoveries came along because pain was an issue when surgery was performed. Chloroform is a colorless chemical and it depresses the body’s organs. This invention was mostly used for women who are going into labor and wants to not feel any pain. At first chloroform was not accepted by others because people believed childbirth is a honor that women should feel the pain, but after the queen requested chloroform more women started to ask for it too. Nitrous oxide was discovered by Joseph Priestly. This drug allowed people to fall into a deep sleep and not feel pain and it is mostly used for dental care. In 1895 x-rays were invented by Wilhelm Roentgen, the “X” stands for unknown. When Roentgen's wife saw her bone when she put her hand in the x-ray she said “I have seen my own death”(Greatest Discoveries in Medicine DVD). The reason why this discovery is important is because it is still used today as an important tool to help find out what is wrong with a patient. Another discovery that was found was microorganisms. Ignaz Semmelweis noticed that a large number of women were dying from childbed fever. Semmelweis also noted that patients of midwives have fewer deaths than of physicians. He realized that physicians did not wash their hands nor did they change their aprons after delivering babies. Louis Pasteur is known as the father of microbiology and he found that microorganisms are around us. Pasteur discovered that microorganism are what causes diseases. In order to kill the growth of bacteria he heats the milk, which is called pasteurization. Vaccines were discovered by Edward Jenner, when he took a healthy child and injected him with cowpox. …show more content…
The boy reacted like everyone else who had cowpox and then he started to feel better after a couple of weeks. Jenner came back and injected the boy ones again, but this time with smallpox (deadly disease). Since, the boy had cowpox it protected him from the infection of smallpox causing him to be immune to the disease. Due to the discoveries by Edward Jenner vaccines were able to save lives. This discovery correlates to the 21st century because we still use vaccines today in order to fight diseases. For example, some of the shots that we take today are the flu shot, hepatitis, and Pasteur created a vaccine for rabies. To sum it all up the 19th century was a time period when people began to find treatments and cures for deadly illness. Since anesthesia was not invented during that
