Also, those who cannot be vaccinated or receive exemptions can rely on those around them to prevent them from contracting the disease, known as “herd immunity”. A community promoting the unsafe effects of vaccines are more likely to contract a disease due to the fact that they are not immune to the diseases. In 2010, a whooping cough outbreak swept the youths of southern California who had not been vaccinated.13 This proves that it is not always safe to rely on herd immunity in a community. The number of parents who aren 't vaccinating their children has grown sufficiently abundant that it may be fueling more dangerous outbreaks of diseases. In a recent survey of more than 1,500 parents, one quarter believed that vaccines can cause autism in healthy children, and more than one in 10 had refused at least one recommended vaccine.14 Doing this can not only effect the life of a child, but also that of a parent. If a child is exposed to a disease, the likelihood of an unvaccinated parent contracting the disease from an unvaccinated child is substantially higher than an unvaccinated parent contracting it from a vaccinated child. To prevent a mass plague among a community, parents should continue and start vaccinating their …show more content…
It should be decided by the parents. Different religions preclude the use of vaccinations due to conflicting beliefs and contravenes on the right to exercise free religion. This argument argues the issue of the government infringing on basic human rights. The freedom to practice religion is a general human right and the government should not be able to intrude on these practices. But, to prevent an outbreak of a mass disease, civilization must be aware of the advantage to vaccinations. While the state shouldn’t be able to mandate personal medical choices, vaccines should be encouraged by the community and local governments. Also, there is a concern that vaccines contain harmful ingredients such as, glutaraldehyde, aluminum, and formaldehyde, which can be unsafe in large doses.18 There have been late studies which concluded that the use of such ingredients may cause lifelong neurodevelopment disorders. Recently, however, it has been proved that this is in fact false.19 Similarly, it is important to realize that the use of these chemicals in a vaccine actually serves a purpose for the medicine, rather than these chemicals being included for no apparent reason. The controversial ingredient, thimerosal, acts as a preservative to prevent growth of bacteria in a vaccine.20 Aluminum helps stimulate the body’s response to a vaccine.21 And formaldehyde helps kill the disease and
