Complexity science I found the literature from the book, On the Edge: Nursing in the Age of Complexity by Claire Lindberg, Sue Nash, and Curt Lindberg on complex adaptive systems (CAS) to be very insightful in regards to the healthcare environment. Nurses hold a position to become leaders in healthcare, yet are not prepared to successfully navigate the complex hospital environment. Instead we are taught that carrying out an intervention should have an expected outcome or that A will lead to B. The harsh reality is that the more complex the scenario becomes the harder it is for even an experienced healthcare provider to foresee an outcome. Much of my education regarding communication focused on delegation and completing orders, not effective communication with the doctor and other care team members. One of the determinants of ensuring safe and quality care for patients relies heavily on effective communication. This becomes of greater importance with the multifaceted health issues plaguing the chronically ill and aging population. I agree that adding teambuilding skills into education programs can negate some of barriers that occur with communication in healthcare. Being able to collaborate with various healthcare providers before licensure would provide a balance of authority between individuals and provide opportunity to fine tune communication skills. It may also help providers realize the positive impact working as a team can have on improved patient outcomes.
