The Observation started at 9:30 am and ended around 10:15 am. Starbucks was a bit more packed than usual. Most likely because it was snowing outside and everyone was in the mood for a warm cup of coffee. There were groups of people sitting on tables, individuals reading their books and the chairs, parents with their babies waiting in line, and this one couple who sat off in the corner on the only two seater couches in the cafe. Out of all the people in this cafe, these two individuals stood out to me the most because they were the only ones who seemed to be in their own little world. It was obvious they were communicating in a nonverbal manner. They hardly took their eyes off each other. “Eye contact refers to the focus of the eyes, and especially to looking at each other’s eyes simultaneously.” ( Verderber-Macgeorge, 137) Person A was a young girl in her early twenties. She was dressed in what seemed to be nursing scrubs along with her backpack that was leaning against the side of the couch. She had her hair tied up in a ponytail and was wearing glasses and a smart watch. Person B was a young man who looked older, in his later twenties or early thirties. He was wearing dark jeans with a dark gray button up shirt with a black tie and glossy dress shoes. The first thing that was noticed was the fact that they maintained eye contact throughout the time they spent …show more content…
Your posture is erect when you straighten your spine, open your chest, and settle your shoulders down and apart, with your head and neck aligned with your spine.” The young guy kept his composure as he sat up straight the whole time. Person A and Person B’s posture were angled towards each other which suggests indirect body orientation. Both of these individuals were directly facing the other with their hands in the side, palms facing up which suggests that they were open towards each other. Often when people are getting to know each other for the first time they would be closed off and play it safe. This was not the case with the two individuals I observed. “Touch is putting part of the body in contact with someone or something, and it is also known as haptics.” As I sat and watched these two communicate in a nonverbal demeanor I also noticed that they would intentionally move closer to each other so their shoulders would touch or their legs. As time progressed Person B lifted his hand and placed it on her
