At both Universities that were founded in 1890, Oklahoma State University(OSU) and The University of Oklahoma(OU), academic integrity policies have been established. OSU and OU are apart of the NCAA Division I Big 12 which causes rivalry since the campuses are a short eighty five miles apart from each other, OSU in Stillwater, Ok and OU in Norman, Ok. OSU is home to roughly 26,000 students, but OU has a slightly larger student population of 27,000 students. Being public institutions, acceptance rates are considerably high for each school which leads to having more students and higher cheating rates. Since the cheating rates have increased on college campuses, OSU and OU have developed academic integrity policies, but OSU’s policy is more effective of the two. Cheating has become a more relevant issue in the past decade across college campuses, even with the use of academic integrity policies. …show more content…
There are numerous reasons why students cheat. In the article Instructing Students in Academic Integrity, according to the authors, “ Cheating tends to be justified when students feel that the material that they are learning is not relevant to educational and personal goals”( Craig, Federici, and Buehler 50). When students don’t feel like an assignment is necessary, then they will simply ask to copy another student's work just to get it done and get the assignment points. This is a very popular trend, especially in a course that doesn’t matter or interests the student. When asking people around campus, the cut throat environment of college and getting into graduate school is the main reason students cheat. In Novotney’s article, an economist Scott Carrell discusses knowing other students are cheating “causes students — particularly those who would not have otherwise — to cheat because they feel like they need to stay competitive and because it creates a social norm of cheating”( 54). Knowing that cheating takes place and a handful of students do it is only the beginning, but knowing how students do it is the next step in preventing it from happening. However, cheating in college means that the student will be unknowledgable about a certain subject, especially what they are majoring in, then they will be totally unprepared when they need to be hired for a job. Students perceive cheating as the reliable and effective method to getting assignments done. If a student manages to cheat their way into their career, then there is no doubt that they will practice unethical and unlawful business. The majority of students cheat because they don’t fully understand what is actually considered cheating. In the article Beat the Cheat, Novotney points out, “Psychological research has also shown that dishonest behaviors such as cheating actually alter a person’s sense of right and wrong, so after cheating once, some students stop viewing the behavior as immoral” (54).Once forming a habit of it, students continue to do it because it is the easy way out. Also, if they did not get caught the first, then they think they will never be caught. I saw cheating everywhere in high school. whether it was a girl copying her friend’s assignment at lunch, a student looking off another's test, or submitting a plagiarized paper. I had many friends
