Have you ever wondered what it took to be considered rich and important in the world of the ancient, innovative Incas? I have, and I will be giving you specific descriptive explanations to give you a good idea of life for the rich nobles back then. There were very specific ideas of what it took to be important in the world of the Incas. Things that were important to them include clothing, hairstyles, and their ways of life.

Everybody who was rich wore the same clothing. This was so that people could identify them as one of the wealthy versus a lowly, poor commoner. The clothes that they wore were very soft and extremely heavily embroidered. This was to help distinguish them as nobles so they would be respected because nobles were either blood related, or close to the Sapa Inca. Also, their clothes were made with fine woven cotton or soft, cuddly wool. This is because the only animals they has were llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, so the only material they had were cotton or wool. One of the reasons is because your hairstyle announced your social position. When a noble was very little, they had a board strapped to their head. This created a point on top of their scalp. This was a major sign of nobility. Each noble ayllu would have their own distinctive hairstyle. This was so you could identify each family. No matter how important you were, only the Sapa Inca could wear beautiful feathers. The Sapa Inca never wore an outfit twice, but he wore the gold and feathered headdress everyday, so it was very important. As you can see, having a hairstyle back then was like having a badge that announces who you are.
As you can see, it was not easy to become a noble, but when you did, you lived a lavish, carefree life. It was hard to become a noble because to be a noble, you had to be rich. Since they didn't have a money system or private property, it was very difficult. I am going to leave you with something to think about.
