Standard 1: Content Knowledge

Think about your growth from novice to expert in this area.
1. Describe your two evidences: What are they? In what context were they created and/or used? The first artifact that I have provided for Standard One: Content Knowledge, is a science lesson plan created during Content Block. This lesson was developed with another student for ED 448: Methods and Materials for Teaching Science. The objective of this lesson was for the students to understand the reason for plants needing sufficient amounts of food, water, space, and sunlight. The lesson involved the students acting as the plants in order to discover if they indeed had a sufficient amount of food, water, space, and sunlight. The standard addressed throughout the lesson was Alabama Course of Study for Science standard 7: describe the life cycle of plants, including seed, seed germination, growth, and reproduction. Also describing how plants occupy space and use light, nutrients, water, and air to survive.

The second artifact that I have attached for Standard One is a social studies and science unit on preparing for natural disasters. This unit was created and implemented during my internship in a third grade classroom at Forest Oaks Elementary School and took place over a five day period. The main standard addressed during this unit was Alabama Course of Study Social Studies Standard Nine: Identify ways to prepare for natural disasters and Science Standard 12: Identify conditions that result in specific weather phenomena, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Throughout the unit, the students were introduced to ways they can prepare for natural disasters such as: fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, and severe thunderstorms. 2. Reflect on the following questions: a. How does the attached lesson plan demonstrate my knowledge of the content area for which it is written? The science lesson plan attached has been provided as evidence for Standard One: Content Knowledge, to demonstrate my knowledge of teaching science.

This plan was intended to teach students about plant’s needs after they have planted seeds and they have sprouted. Based on my knowledge of science, student’s need to know the life cycle of a plant and the needs as it grows before studying the plant itself. This lesson includes an interactive activity in order for the students to have a closer look as to why plants need specific amounts of food, water, space, and sunlight. I included this lesson as an artifact because engaging activities motivate the students to learn. b. How does the attached unit plan demonstrate my knowledge of curriculum and particularly my understanding of the Alabama Course of Study? The unit on preparing for natural disasters, attached as an artifact for Standard One: Content Knowledge, demonstrates my knowledge of the Alabama Course of Study as well as Common Core. When planning this unit, I researched multiple ways to actively engage the students in the lesson and motivate them to learn. I decided to use the Alabama Course of Study (ALCOS) and Common Core standards throughout the unit. The standards covered by this unit are ALCOS Social Studies standard nine and Science standard twelve for third grade, as mentioned in the provided evidences. In order to address Common Core standards, I integrated Speaking and Listening standard 3.1 for students to aid in discussion and Reading Informational Text standard 3.1

Greetings, The exercise for this learning guide unit was really useful. There are many case in which one could need to look for a file, or just directory information, and this assignment gave us the opportunity to play a little with this. I had to write something similar some time ago to consolidate thousands of .csv files into one single file. The files were generated by a test system in which only 32 units can be tested simultaneously.…

The most impactful books are those that bring world inside of them to life in vivid detail. In Hope Jahren’s “Lab Girl,” the world brought to life is our own. However, rather than conveying a human-centric story, Jahren focuses on an often-forgotten character: plants. Jahren is a geochemist and geobiologist, and “Lab Girl” is a cross between a memoir and a textbook explaining the intricacies of plant life. The most memorable excerpts are those where plants are personified, from the stories ingrained in wood to the miracles of the resurrection plant.…

The artifact I chose for standard 6 was the letter I wrote to my student’s parents for PED 356. This letter was sent to the parents of the student to inform them of the behavior I noticed, improvements made through out the semester, and skills that could be worked on at home. The letter to parents from PED 356 relates to Element 6.4 because in the letter I demonstrate my ability to discuss some weaknesses that could be improved in a respectful and sensitive manor. I first discussed in the letter the great personality the student expressed during class and all the improvement she made through out the semester.…

Most people have a general sense of what the common core is but they are uneducated just to what it actually entails. In 2009 the standards for teaching in our schools that we know as the common core were launched. According to the common core’s website, corestandards.org, the common core was created in order to have equal standardize across our nation. Before the common core, states were able to mandate their own expectations of their students leading to an unbalanced education system. These standards were set into place in order to prepare students for higher education and careers.…

When looking over the Common Core State Standards from the Loveless reading, he took a very negative approach on what the standards would change about schools. The part that was most interesting to me was when Loveless referred to furthering teacher development with the Common Core Standards. Through the Common Core Standards teachers will get further development through changing teaching styles, implementing mentor programs, and providing ongoing support. When looking through teacher development there was many different sources that all had interesting ideas on how to change the teaching styles in the classroom. “The Common Core State Standards for English Language and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical subjects have…

Pupils should be able to explore plants, animals including humans, everyday materials and seasonal changes (DfE, 2013). Statutory requirements remain focused around following practical scientific methods and skills through the teaching of science. This can involve encouraging individuals to ask simple questions, performing tests and using observations and recorded data to identify answers (DfE, 2015). Although science is now labelled as a core subject, the Wellcome Trust (2014), suggests that science Is much more than a compulsory subject as it aims to inspire and encourages children to be inquisitive about the planet around them as well as helping children to develop a range of skills which can be used across the curriculum. This is agreed by Beckett (2013), as she describes science as just as important as any other subject as it is so vast and the content learnt can be applied throughout aspects of everyday life.…
