In this essay I will be defining the main attributes of leadership and how this differs from management. I will also be discussing and analysing the key features of an effective leader in the early years sector and the quality of practice, drawing on theoretical perspectives and my own experiences.
To begin, many people may believe that leadership and management are the same concept, however ‘one can be a leader without being a manager’ (Jones & Pounds 2008:16). Thus it is important to define the difference. Hersey (cited in Isles- Buck and Newstead 2003:2) stated that leadership is ‘any attempt to influence the behaviour of another individual or group’, whereas management is ‘working with and through others to accomplish organisation goals’ (Bush & Coleman 2000:19). As a inspiring leader I have chosen the characteristics I feel is most fundamental to discuss.There are many internal exceptions of staff within settings and It is important to Continuing Professional Development as you work. The way in which a leader listens and responds to staff, families and children is crucial for effective communication. Communication is often seen as one of the biggest challenges for a leader as they are “unaware that their communication and interpersonal skills are fundamental to leadership’ (Rodd 2006:2). Leaders will need to communicate important information on policies, day-to-day duties, while giving rewards and empathy. Moreover, Leaders must make people feel comfortable and part of a team with an ‘empathic approach to others who have own values and cultures. (Moyles 2006:30).
